Haxey is the largest parish in the Isle of Axholme. Within it's boundaries are the villages of Haxey and Westwoodside and the hamlets of  Low Burnham, East Lound, Graizelound (Craiselound), Newbigg, Upperthorpe, Nethergate, Coney Garth and Park.
Haxey is  famous for the "Haxey Hood", a game which takes place on 6th January every year.

Haxey - 1086 Acheseia (Domesday Book)
        1285 Axaia
        1373 Hakesay

Hákr' - mans name (Old Scandinavian)

ey - island in marsh (Old Scandinavian)

Hákr + ey = Haxey

Meaning - island in a marsh, of a man called Hákr

 

Burnham - 1086 Brune (Domesday Book)
          1115 Brunum

brunnr - place at a spring or stream (Old Scandinavian)

Meaning - settlement by a spring or stream

 

East Lound - 1086 Lund (Domesday Book)
             1370 Estlound

lundr - grove or small wood (Old Scandinavian)

Meaning - eastern grove or wood

 

Interpretation of other hamlets and areas

Newbigg = new buildings

Upperthorpe = upper or higher settlement

Nethergate = lower gateway or street

Coney Garth = rabbit enclosure

Park = parkland or field
